About Kali Tiger Reserve

Kali Tiger Reserve, located in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India, spans diverse terrain characterized by dense evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, riverine ecosystems, and hilly landscapes. It was declared a tiger reserve to enhance tiger conservation efforts in the Western Ghats, one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. The reserve forms part of the Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve complex and includes areas around the Kali River, which provides essential water resources sustaining the region’s flora and fauna. The forest supports a variety of wildlife species including Bengal tigers, leopards, elephants, Indian bison (gaur), and numerous bird species. The ecosystem supports rare reptiles and amphibians as well. The history of the reserve dates back to its establishment as a protected area to conserve the endangered tiger population and maintain forest cover amid increasing human pressures. Outdoor enthusiasts visiting Kali Tiger Reserve can experience guided safaris, bird watching tours, trekking, and river rafting on the Kali River. The reserve also highlights conservation education programs and eco-tourism promoting sustainable interaction with nature. Visitors are drawn by the opportunity to glimpse elusive wildlife, explore less trodden forest trails, and admire the riverine landscapes that contribute to the ecological richness of the Western Ghats region.
